The thirty-ninth week stayed in the quiet register. No message came. No required absence was written. The notebook remained on the dining table with its most recent short entry already complete, and the continuous dark map on Priya’s breasts needed only the ordinary attention of mornings and evenings.
Monday began the same way most quiet days now began. Rajesh woke against her hip, already hard, and took her with the short, intense rhythm that no longer tried to be polite. His hands went at once to the continuous dark map, fingers spreading across the soft undersides, thumbs brushing the nipples until milk beaded and ran. He moved inside her with the familiarity of long practice, the single stretch still incomplete compared with the dual, yet charged with everything the collection had made of both of them. When he finished he stayed buried, forehead against hers, one hand still covering the marked flesh as if the contact itself were part of the maintenance the debt required.
